Browns Offense shows (a little) progress

Not sure I would have title the article that if it was me. You got to squint real hard to try and make this O out to have shown progress of any kind.

I have bolded some of the things I found to be key in the article. All of this should not be going on in week 7 of the NFL season. WTF were these guys doing during the QB camps, mini-camps, OTA, training camp, and preseason. :soapbox:

Browns' offense shows (a little) progress

What does a head coach do when his quarterback completes 11 of 41 passes in two weeks?

He gives Derek Anderson another chance, that's what.

Eric Mangini during his Monday news conference made it clear Anderson will start against the Packers on Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium and gave no indication he will be playing for his job.

The offense with Anderson starting the last three weeks has averaged a touchdown a game, which for the Browns is an explosion. They have scored four offensive touchdowns in 72 possessions this season after playing the last six games of 2008 without one.

Put another way, the Browns are 31st in the league in offense and 30th in points scored. Part of that goes back to the 10 quarters Brady Quinn played before being benched.

"There have been times where we've moved the ball really effectively," Mangini said. "The drive we had at the beginning of the second half is indicative of things we can do.

"There were some positive things that I've seen throughout the course of Derek working at quarterback that I think will get better."

After being shut out in the first half at Pittsburgh, the Browns took the third-quarter kickoff and moved 66 yards for a touchdown in six plays. Mohamed Massaquoi caught a deep pass for a 43-yard gain on the drive — the longest play of the season for the Browns. Three of Massaquoi's five catches were made on the drive capped by a one-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Vickers.

But then there were the 11 other possessions Sunday.

Three of them ended in turnovers by Anderson — two of them on fumbles and one on an interception on a pass intended for Massaquoi — and one an interception thrown by Josh Cribbs.

By a press box count, seven passes were dropped in Pittsburgh. Nine were dropped the week before against the Bills.

"We have to do a much better job of not stopping ourselves whether it be with the dropped balls or some throws that are a little bit off," Mangini said. "It could be tightening up the protection or tightening up the routes. All those things I think we can do better."

Anderson walked into the locker room Monday, made a beeline to his dressing stall and saw a group of reporters eager to question him. The locker room was nearly deserted, and he joined the deserters quickly after saying with a smile: "Oh, Lord, I'm not talking today."

Massaquoi has been inconsistent. He caught eight passes against the Bengals and one against the Bills. He also had three dropped passes in the Buffalo game. He had five catches and three drops in the Pittsburgh game.

Massaquoi has become Anderson's go-to guy without Braylon Edwards as a target. That's a lot to put on a rookie's shoulders, but fellow rookie Brian Robiskie did not catch his first NFL pass until Sunday, and Chansi Stuckey hasn't caught a pass in the two games played since being acquired in the Edwards trade Oct. 7.

"It's clicked at certain points," Massaquoi said Monday. "We just haven't had it click throughout the game for 60 minutes. But knowing that it's clicked at certain points means it can click throughout the whole game and it can click for the rest of the season. That part's going to come. Hopefully it comes sooner than later."

Mike Furrey played only briefly Sunday and did not have a pass thrown in his direction. Mangini on Monday second-guessed himself and said Furrey should have played more.

Josh Cribbs, a starting receiver in the opener, has nine catches for the season but only two in the last four games.

Tight end Steve Heiden missed the Pittsburgh game with a knee injury. Robert Royal, the tight end signed in free agency, has dropped five passes.

Unless the Browns trade defensive end Corey Williams for a veteran receiver and a magic wand before the 4 p.m. deadline today, the last 10 games could be more of the same.

The ONLY progress I've seen out of the O is every week Mack just keeps getting better.
And as far as sticking with Drive Assassin, I agree, you've got the WORST starting qb in the league out there, you can only go up.

11-41 the lowest ranked QB in the league and he feels this guy gives you the best chance to win. Mangini either smokes crack or just seriously has some sort of personal hatred for BQ. You either play BQ after the last two weeks or you ship him out of town for a pick next year. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. this shit is insane.

If that was indeed the case, that he was sat so as not to reach the escalators while "learning" how to hand-off to Jamal Lewis for 2 yds up the middle....

..If I was Queens, I'd take that 1st snap (on my to 69%) and fire it right at Eric's fat stupid face and try to knock his headset off. Either that or see if I can knock the beard off of "Dabs."

What if DA has the "giants game of last year" this week. He will of course blow up immediatley but does that solidify him even further as manginis guy?

Yes. To prop him up and then give up on him would make you look dumb.

Because starting a guy this shitty doesn't make you look dumb already.

Only 10 more games before Marty comes back!

Razor, the only way DA does that is if a team is stupid enough to play the wrong base defense against him like the Giants did last year.

The only reason he had that game is because they didn't game plan for him like every other team did last year, and no one is sure why -_-.

Very true. I also think the Giants came in over looking CLE. Especially after the beat down they put on CLE in the preseason. There is not a DC on the Browns remaining schedule that is going to go away from the formula that works in making DA look like the one trick pony he is.

Although I don't think DA is playing well, the fact that he is playing poorly and BQ can still not get back in says a ton about what the coaches think about BQ.

Team does not have a QB for the future at this point.

Agree with most of that, in principle.

The exception is I think it says more about the staff than it does either QB. They had the whole offseason to watch tape of both QBs, QB camps, mini-camp, OTA, training camp, and preseason to sort out the QB situation and the offense.

They came out of camp and picked Quinn. All conspiracy theories aside, they came out of all that work saying Quinn was the best chance to win. 10 quarters later (against some solid D's), they pull him and insert DA (who promptly throws 3 picks). Then come and tell us DA is the best chance to win. Fast forward 3 weeks later, the O is still terrible, points are hard to come by from the O, DA is completing less passes than Jamarcus Russell, and producing less than Russell (forget BQ is even on the roster and let that sink for a second, it's chilling).

Let's even say DA really does give CLE the best chance to win and BQ is worse as a QB. This staff again had all this in front of them through the whole process. They couldn't see they are both then terrible and make some kind of move before the season?

I guess in the end, what EM and his staff does, says, or who they start really carries little credibility with me right now. We are all watching the same garbage from both sides of the ball, that is coming from those guys. Based on what I have seen, I have no reason to believe these guys really know what is best for any position, from the QB to the water boy.

Either that or see if I can knock the beard off of "Dabs."

Dabs has a beard? I thought you needed...you know...testosterone or balls or something to have a beard.

Interesting.

Team does not have a QB for the future at this point.

I agree with that...and I'll take it a step further. Essentially 'starting' Josh Cribbs as QB (even if only in the wildcat) against the squeelers says a TON to me about staff confidence in Derefumble Anderception.

Im thinking it has more to do with BQs contract and the 70% snap clause and giving the team some time to gel while also giving BQ some time to get hungry and to think about how important his next opportunity is...ITS HIS LAST..

I could be wrong but if i am then that says either 2 things..

(1)BQ has developed a serious problem from 3 years on the bench and the lerner secret service organization isnt saying anything..i watched this kid for almost 4 years at ND and yeah he can (or could)play at an nfl level..

If not then:
(2)Mangini is a punkass moron that really knows nothing about the game or grooming a young QB..which is a scary though heading into the future and seeing his pet project ratty or BQ really did something big to piss daboll and mangini off and it would have to be big which i doubt...

Im really hoping its just the contract clause and team gel scenario..otherwise we have many more years of hell to pay for fighting to keep the browns....

Right now I am guessing the first part of option 2, and the closing line.
