Did you really just compare a QB to a DE? Yikes.
Quarterback is the most important position in sports. No position has a greater impact on wins and losses than a franchise QB. A great defensive end can wreck a game, but a great quarterback changes the trajectory of an entire organization. That’s Football 101. So of course an elite quarterback is going to command a significantly larger return than an elite defensive end.
When the Browns traded for Watson, he wasn’t some average starter. He had already played four seasons, was in his prime, won Offensive Rookie of the Year, made three straight Pro Bowls, led the NFL in passing yards in his most recent full season, and held the highest career completion percentage in NFL history at the time. He was widely viewed as a Top 5 quarterback and was only 26 years old.
Whether the trade ultimately worked out is a completely separate discussion. We all know it hasn’t. But acting like the Browns paid for the version of Watson we’ve seen after multiple major injuries ignores reality. They paid for the quarterback who was one of the most accomplished young passers in football and was entering what should have been the prime of his career. That’s why the compensation was what it was.
