That's exactly what I'm saying. At least there are some reports out there where he didn't, but there isn't one, even weak report, that he did. Other than connect-the-dot kings, keyboard warriors, talking-heads, and conspiracy theorists.

"Therefore it's likely true", and I'm not saying you're saying that, I'm not so sure.

If I'm an owner and want to meddle, I'd have done it at the end of the third when they pick the imp over Xavier Watts. Haslam already said this is a multi-year plan, and we had the two 1sts in the bag for next year.

Having said that, also if I'm an NFL owner, I don't buy a team so I can never have input. That'd suck lol. Lucky, I'm just a shmuck. And like all shmucks, in the end, I don't know jack about what happened in the draft room.

The owner's basic job is to fund the team and do it well. Compared to the Steelers and Bengals, and heck most of the league, Haslam does that. Only two other owners (Rams and Commanders) will have put more money into their stadium than he has. I for one and glad the poor owner days (Art M) are behind us. Just wish we could find the damn QB, as that's the problem, as we all know.

Here is what I think happened. Berry and Stefanski both liked and wanted Sanders heading into the draft. What they didn't like was the circus around Sanders, especially after the Watson fiasco and the black eye that he left them with. They liked him, but not quite enough to risk their jobs on, which everyone knows but the media now tries to play off that Deion Dipshit was trying to ride his sons coattails into a GM/HC position in the NFL as a "package deal." Draft Sanders #2 overall and he struggles? His daddy is going to be blowing up Haslam phone demanding you're fired, and Truckstop Jimmy just might oblige.

So they decided that they were going to pass on Sanders, acquire firepower for a QB next year and play the draft safe. We like Shadeur, but not enough to risk our jobs on.

Round 3 came along and they said nah, we better not. Let's grab a developmental QB to say we grabbed a QB kind of sort of early and just roll with Flacco and Brissett.

Then he fell to the 5th. Their hands got itchy. The sweat started dripping off their foreheads. Do we do it? I mean, we scouted the hell out of the kid and the talent is there, and at this point if his dad tries meddling or the circus sideshow gets carried away we can cut ties pretty easily and go back to our original plan. If this works out though we look like geniuses with this draft and our jobs are secure, these warm seats are going to get pretty cold. Fuck it, why not? Let's trade back into the 5th and take the kid and see how it goes.

I am 99.9999% certain That's exactly how it played out.

And it was smart.

Real smart.

They positioned themselves so Sanders has to work his way up and earn it.

They also cucked his big mouth, overrated daddy Deion "Turf Toe" Sanders to where daddy big mouth has ZERO leverage and is cut out of the whole deal.

If I'm Jimmy those guys are fucked no matter what happens. they proved they have no idea of what they are doing QB wise no matter how this turns out. if they both fail I'm not letting them screw up another draft next year. if Sanders plays well that might save them for awhile.
but I still can't keep them around if I still need a QB in the near future. wasting the 3th rd pick is haunting.
 
USA Today says AB starting making calls to draft Shedeur when the draft was still in the 4th round, and kept calling until someone finally agreed to the trade, at pick 144. The FO was probably, thus, thinking about it starting early in the 4th. Who knows. Splitting hairs on all of that timing.

But agree, a reasonable way it likely happened.

My main fear was we wouldn't address the QB room at all, "build the team", and gamble that we could get one next year.
Instead, we took 2 QB's, signed 2 vets, and positioned ourselves very well to draft a QB next year. We actually have the ammo to move up. Without that extra pick, we'd have a season of hoping we suck bad enough. We've done that before. Wasn't fun. Fuck that.

We still may end up rooting for suckage come week 12, but at least the first month or two ought to be interesting. And, of course, we have won the Off Season Trophy once again. Damn we're good at the off season haha.
 
FTR, the trade summary is:

Browns receive
  • Pick No. 144 (round 5): Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado - the 2nd ranked QB on tape​

Seahawks receive
  • Pick No. 166 (Round 5): Tory Horton, Wide Receiver, Colorado State - the 15th ranked WR
  • Pick No. 192 (Round 6): Bryce Cabeldue, Guard, Kansas - the 32nd ranked G/T

Two teams with two different goals in that moment, but I don't think we missed out on anything letting pick 166 and 192 go.

It's the polar opposite.

How it played out shows they possibly learned their lesson from the Watson fiasco and are being prudent in getting the answer at QB.

It has been no secret I was against the Berry hire and WAYYYYY against hiring Stefanski when it happened. Didn't like nor respect either one. This draft has made me lukewarm to them because of how they did it.

It was smart. Really smart. Unlike when we bit on Johnny Jackass, unlike when we blew 1/4 billion dollars on a serial rapist and unlike when we signed another rapist to be his back up.

No, we looked at the whole picture with the QB position and sat back on it. Stockpile some early picks and go after a candidate next season. In the mean time see about developing a former 1st rounder and a 3rd round rookie behind a Journeyman starter.

It paid off. It may have paid off in a huge way. If Sanders matches the hype? Shit, these guys got him for a can of Pepsi and bag of Dorito's, all while getting in position to draft some high end talent around him next year.

If it plays out in our favor it bodes well for this FO and they're not going anywhere.

I love it. Had we taken Sanders at #2 he would be walking in the door with the "I am a Legend" bullshit, entitled that he is starting on day 1 no matter what. His dad would be on the phone with Haslam every 5 minutes dictating how things are going to run moving forward.

It played out in the best possible way not only for us but for Sanders as well. As a 5th rounder everything has to be earned, nothing is given. Your dad can't say or do a damn thing about it, because as a 5th rounder you're walking a fine line and could be cut and sitting at home in a hurry, hoping someone signs you.

Shadeur Sanders now has the breathing room to become his own man and write his own story in the NFL.

From all the accounts you're posting up the kid is running with it and fighting and scraping to earn it with a relentless drive and determination. I like it, it's a really good thing.

Minus some of the hyperbole and name calling, I'd believe this to be about 90% true.
Deion should realize by now it's best if he's not shadowing Shedeur in any way.
Shedeur needs to show up sharp and capable and the spotlight will show every one what the Browns have in their QB room.
There's a good chance the Browns will have more trouble picking a starting QB than they had getting all four of them.

We were all told "the circus is coming!!!". Well, it's early, but we just had media out the wazoo at a fricken rookie mini-camp, and it all went very calmly with Sanders throwing very well, and interviewing even better. He just talked about the work, studying the playbook instead of watching the Cavs game, etc.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have no QB, the Bengals have their 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, and sack leader sitting out, the Bears are fighting a QB PR problem, etc etc.

There will always be drama for every team, but so far, the Sanders drama concern is a total meh.

I think Sanders is levelheaded. The drama comes from his dad, who hopefully is very busy in Colorado. I fear Howard is going to be good for the Steelers. We will see. I'm still pulling for Sanders to win the starting job in camp.

I really don't think he's ever tried to live in his dad's coattails. And I don't think us getting him in the 5th rather than the 2nd affects his work ethic. He wants to be great and make his own name famous. Shedeur has always been praised as a very hard worker and an excellent leader. He may not be as arm talented as Baker (best rookie QB we've ever had) coming out of college, but he is certainly more ready to lead a team. And that's as important as raw talent.

I love how people accused Deion of daddy-balling it. Well, when you put your kid in at QB, there's no hiding if he can do it or not. This isn't a Bronny situation. The kid has produced 7 years in a row. It's closer to a Manning situation.

Who gives a flip if Deion is overly involved. Watson basically had no dad. CJ's is in prison. As long as business continues to be handled like it was in minicamp, approach wise, we're good.

In any event, let's see. It's up to Shedeur now.
