The Offensive Line

Absolutely devastated by the Bailey news. I hadn't seen and was just coming to post about that man.

The Browns line, minus Pasztor, was absolutely flawless. There were multiple plays in which an already pretty gain would have been much more minus both Bailey and Greco being a little slow to break off the double and hit the second level block. At new positions, this is totally to be expected, and in time those fractions of a second are reduced. This run game, which is already top five, is going to be something special when the consistency kicks in - if we can ever fucking get there.

There was also a handful of plays in which Miami pissed me off just by having that one man make a great play. This was typically Kiko Alonso, who just pops off film as incredible. There were a good 4/5 runs that would have been massive if not for the noticeable quick reactions of a player or two. I think it was Jenkins who responded flawlessly to the end around to Hawkins - everyone else was blocked for a would-be touchdown. I'm sitting here just smiling away at the thought of them dying a slow, painful death. Motherfuckers ruined several huge plays. I hate when an individual moment of brilliance ruins everything.

Pasztor was fucking terrible. I mean, just wow. He was routinely not making initial contact on favourable angles, he was getting blown up in the passing game, he was clearly the Browns weakest run blocker, and all those penalties were just terrible. He's just a shitty, shitty tackle.

Greco is our C. He was fantastic, absolutely incredible. Even with this Bailey news, keep him there. Fuck it. Put Pasztor back at G. I implore people to understand that Pasztor was a guard in college, he entered the NFL as a guard, injuries in Jacksonville forced him to RT where he sucked, he was excellent for us as a G last season and he's back to stinking it up at RT. I'm not saying he'll without doubt be perfect, but he's a guard and has always been better there. He was a real bright spot for us last season at his natural position. I don't want to give up on the guy totally, just give up on him at RT, because we've seen him play very well at guard.

Thomas/Bitonio/Greco/Pasztor/Coleman - If shit goes the way we know it goes, our only real concern is our rookie RT who is a fantastic talent and will only get better.

I'm so encouraged by this line and Hue Jackson's rushing scheme. So clever, so simple, and it's creating space. Be it Crow or Duke, those guys didn't skip a beat and more often than not had a hole exactly where they wanted it.

I like Bailey too and wanted to see him grow at guard a bit. PFF doesn't like him ranking him 60th of 71 guards.

Tuesday morning seems to be when the stats have fully matured.

Tidbits:

- Bitonio is kicking ass. He's top-10 right now 9th.
- Thomas is Thomas. Top-10 at 8th.
- Greco is 15th. How many games has he played at center? Like 1.5? 2.5? Pretty sure he faced a guy named Suh last Sunday too. Maurkice Pouncey of Pittsburgh is 17th, for reference.

So right now, we have 2 elite lineman, a very good center in Greco, and just need to figure out the RG and RT.

BUT, last year, with elite Mack, Thomas, Bitonio, and (highly rated) Schwartz - our run game was ranked toward the bottom.

NOW, with the same running backs, a lesser O line, we're ranked 4th - above Dallas and above all of our AFCN brethren (Pittsburgh is 18th, Ravens are 26th, Bengals are 27th).

Like you said BDU. It's Hue and his scheme.

I'm feeling pretty damn good this morning we're a QB away from competing right now. At this point, the off season will need to focus on 2 O-lineman (but Drango and Coleman have to play out this season) and the QB.

The more I read about Austin Reiter, the more I'm intrigued. Two-time finalist for the Rimington Award. Upon being drafted, he said:

“I think that is extremely important at my position,” Reiter said. “You want to get the ball to the quarterback every single time. You want to do your job every time. I feel like the center position is one of the most important positions on the field to be the most consistent at.”

He's all-in at the position. I like that.

Drango saw a lot of time as the extra OL (also used as an extra TE)....wonder if he is ready to take the RT and move Pasztor to RG and leave Greco at C???

But then again, Pasztor has actually started to play decent at RT...

Pasztor sure gets above avg run game grades, and I don't recall him getting routinely blown up like he did in Miami on passing downs.

I'd rather get Drango work. Hoping it's JT-JB-JC-SD-AP vs the Pats.

But, you can just feel Cam lurking. He's the only O-lineman where quality of play doesn't seem to matter, he just gets in.

BTW, Bitonio is officially a stud. Passes the eye test and the PFF test. Ranked 7th of 71 guards currently, and trending upword.

If someone called for Cam, what would you guys take?

I'd take a 3rd in a heartbeat. No way it happens.

Man, I was hoping and praying for Cam to come around...but the OL play since he is out is all the proof you need that he just wasn't getting it. At this point, I would take a backup C.

I certainly wouldn't put cam back in at Center ever. I believe I read somewhere they might try him at RG but if he was that bad at LG last year, I don't see how swapping sides will show any marked improvement. He seems like a nice kid and hard working so I hope he finds a place somewhere but you can't argue that this was the best the OL has looked through 4 weeks.

Pastzor isn't going to work at RT. He just doesn't have the feet for it and that really isn't his fault. He's being forced into duty at RT because there aren't better options available. I would be shocked (pleasantly) if he continues to turn in relatively clean sheets in pass protection going forward.

Now, if we keep averaging 6+ per carry then pass protection will get easier and easier. There is that. ;)

Agree, Pasztor is likely this year's solution. And he's getting on huge fair-shake to prove he can hold down RT. Like you Grey, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Everything I've read is the team wants S. Coleman there, but once he's there, they don't want to look back. And they don't want to question themselves about rushing him in there if he fails, so they're moving slowly with him.

What I don't get is if Nassib, Ogbah, and Kindred can just muscle their way into the lineup, why hasn't Coleman? They're claiming it's the knee, but I'm not sure I'm buying it. It would make more sense that he's not looking the part.

I'm confused by the Shon Coleman thing, gotta assume he's not physically right at this point. This brass has been about putting young guys on the field to find out, not waiting for them to be perfect in practice. When they drafted Coleman they felt like they got incredible value for that slot.

But yeah, until I hear otherwise, I assume he's the long term answer at right tackle.

I keyed on Reiter a lot, something I rarely do, and he was playing his ass off, blowing open holes. I can see why the Redskins were bummed to lose him. Such a bummer to be playing like that, figuring you may have a shot at establishing yourself as an NFL starter... and then blow out your knee in the same game.

But overall, the line play was pretty damn good Sunday, even after the injury.

Nassib, Ogbah & Kindred were dead even or better than the guy ahead of them.

But Shon Coleman had better competition. (initially thought, the impression Pasztor gave in 2015)

The reason Shon didn't go in the 2nd Round was because he wouldn't be ready to step in, not healthy & fully strong by Sept/Oct...

The Browns are doing the right thing with Shon Coleman. Get 'em strong. Get 'em confident. And don't let 'em look back once plugged in. He's obviously the clay & make-up of a top 10-15 starting RT in the NFL. Maybe even better... fairly likely, based on skill & trajectory from pre-cancer years at Auburn.

The Alvin Bailey buzzed driving (or whatever that was, his 2nd offence... strike 2) really came at a bad, bad time for CLE.
Just when Cam Erving flops & Pasztor underwhelms.... he goes drink driving!

Absolutely nothing on him on Roto...

Digging deeper:

From the Illinois State Athletics page:

Started all 15 games at left tackle … three-year starter on the offensive line … named MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week (Nov. 15), after he graded out at 96 percent and helped the Redbirds rush for 293 yards and a season-best four touchdowns on the ground in a 45-26 win at South Dakota … key member of the offensive line unit that led the way for Coprich, who led the FCS and the MVFC in rushing yards (2,274) and rushing touchdowns (27) ... also aided Coprich in rushing for over 100 yards in 14 out of 15 games, setting a school and league mark for consecutive 100-plus yard games to start a season.
