I knew exactly what you meant. You meant that there was no rationalization you could use to make you feel not so bad about losing that game. You couldn't say the guys fought hard and just came up short. You couldn't say it really didn't matter. In former years, we all knew we really weren't going anywhere anyway, so what the heck. But not this year and not this game. This game might realistically turn out to be the game that keeps us out of the playoffs this year. In that sense, it was a total disaster.

But in the longer view, we have so much more to look forward to in the future than we thought we had only a couple of years ago. We need to remember that too.

Cowher just pointed out that last season, 7 of the 12 playoff teams lost their opener. 2 of those went to 0-2. We need to win next week and then pick one off where we aren't favored, like Rams or Patriots or Steelers on the road. One of those three would even the scales.

Early prediction. If the Browns roll over the Jets this week, I think we carry that momentum into week 3 Sunday Night Football to beat the Rams.
 
Jason Mailata of the Eagles is the only name out there in trade talk, but they made everybody including the Browns aware that he's not available. Seen as an emerging star, only 22, strong and athletic, a long-term starter.

I've seen people suggest that we offer them a 2nd rounder because he's thought to be that good. If he really is, it's a steal, probably better than what you could draft, and you get him now.

Thinking in Philly is that when Lane Johnson retires, Mailata steps in. But a 2nd... I doubt they'd sneeze at that. Mailata, Teller, Forbes, and Corbett would be a really promising group of young OL to go with Bitonio and whoever else.

I do not think the Browns will let both Tretter and Robinson go. Too much turnover. Starting to think they should lock down Tretter to lock in Bitonio-Tretter-Teller.
 
Imagine having Jordan Peters and Lane Johnson as your starting LT and RT, and then Andre Dillard and Jordan Mailata as your back-up LT and RT.

I don't see Mailata being traded. He had a really impressive pre-season, showing exceptional growth from his hit-and-miss rookie season. He's got three years left on his contract, and so does Lane Johnson (29).

We really need to address our tackle situation because I'm not overly confident with LT or RT. Be that now or later, I'm really hoping Dorsey aggressively addresses not only the current starters but also depth.

Man, do I have a vibe on Teller. I think he's gonna end up starting for us for a while, whether it's RG, RT, or who knows where. Guy just seems like a player, tape is really strong.

How hurt is Lamm, I wonder? We're clearly thin at OT but if he's only out a week and Forbes is back week 7... I don't know. Still thought we'd look to trade for an OT.

Certainly feels like OL is the focus next offseason. Interested to see if I feel exactly that way in a month. Line could settle in and play like last season's second half.
 
Robinson "pitched a perfect game" before his ejection, so he's still on track to get very rich. Bitonio, Tretter, and Kush were also very good.

Hubbard and McCray were not... and Baker held the ball too long, as many are whispering. Gameplan, I'm sure. They wanted to go all Monken.

If we can get a right side from Kush, Teller, Forbes, and Corbett, might be able to square together a really good OL. Or Hubbard could just play better and let Kush hold off Teller as long as he can.
 
This is a vintage 2018-ish type of stat. We just need to get Bake outta the huddle in time for pre-snap decisions.

PFF rankings through week 2, fwiw. Aaron Donald will surely knock it down the IOL a peg, but for now...

  • LT Robinson - 29th, out of 74
  • LG Bitonio - 1st out of 70
  • C Tretter - 4th out of 32
  • RG Kush - 14th out of 70
  • RT Hubbard - 53rd, out of 74

Our offensive line bends severely, However I’m much more concerned about Baker being in a funk right now.
What I saw last night was the Jets getting good pressure our guys were backing up a little but holding up.
Baker is a deer in the headlights right now, he isn’t going through his reads, because he panics the line is failing and he just runs out of the pocket.
This is just one man’s opinion.
 
Robinson can't be credited with a sack so far unless they blew it on the 3-second walk around where Baker didn't step up. Watched him a lot, my son and I, played a very good game last night. Definitely a legit starting LT at this point.

Doesn't mean we have to but I sure as hell doesn't mean we shouldn't. Kush outplaying Zeitler so far is a fun stat. We have a couple guys (one available, one not) in Teller and Forbes I'm interested to see if Hubbard keeps sucking. That's what bye weeks are for, one-man OL shuffles.

Teller is almost 6'5" and can move. Has played some RT. I won't be shocked if he's a day one upgrade.
 
More on OL, and blowing up false narratives, including my own: Hubbard had the second best pass blocking score (80) to Bitonio. He sucked run blocking but was quite good protecting Baker.

As was was the whole line: 0 sacks, 2 hits. Baker was nailed with both sacks by PFF (and I agree, as you know). The starting OL has given up 0 sacks this season when on the field together. Imagine when the QB braintrust stops taking 3.5 seconds for something to develop downfield... on every single goddamn pass play.

...I still think we need context here. The offense isn't hitting on all cylinders, but it DID put up 23 against a very good Jets D.

As for Baker, remember that 3 of his INT's came behind a makeshift OL and with him sporting a pretty significantly bruised throwing hand. Prior to the Robinson ejection Baker was 7/11 for 94 yards , and 8/12 for 104 before the injury. Pretty nice stats.

I think that series of events made more of an impact on Baker than many think. His 3 INT's didn't have the same zip on the ball, the same drive. Trouble gripping the ball can definitely do that.

As for the Jets, I give the credit to GGG more than problems with Baker. GGG had a year of watching Baker and designed a D that took advantage of that knowledge.

Now, we just need to see if Baker/Monken/Kitchens can make adjustments to correct what was exposed.
 
Sometimes the PFF stuff doesn't reconcile with the eye. In this case I think calling our OL the best pass protecting unit through two weeks is one of those times. I'd kill to know if that's how the NFL def coordinators feel. (My guess? Not so much)

That said I've been on the Kitchens/Monken/Mayfield thing from the jump too. Something's not right there so who really knows? OL might actually be kicking ass. Just doesn't "feel" that way.

It's our guards and center. 3 out of 5 are better than most.

Tretter - 4th
Bitonio - 1st
Kush - 14th

... that's pretty darn good (and as I've posted elsewhere, Zeitler is 22nd)


And the OT's get less blame, in the eyes of PFF, when the QB holds the ball forever, and Baker is near the top in TTT thus far.

Hubbard, for as unimpressed as we've all been, is neck and neck, passblocking wise, with Nate Solder, Orlando Brown Jr, and Ryan Ramczyk
