The Offensive Line

It's not great. But it's worth saying it could be a whole lot worse and we're far from the bottom. More of a middling OL but that's not what you want on a team aiming at playoffs every year.

It's a cluttered pocket and too often we have the "free rusher" and that's inside Baker's head, as Jake said. He doesn't trust the pocket and that's the biggest issue we have (not getting "beat up").

As far as I win or I'm right or whatever: We're all right and we all know what we're talking about. The line should NOT have regressed so much based on flipping one guard to another known for pass protection. And Wyatt Teller played EXTREMELY well last year for Buffalo, then more in preseason, but he's been "up and down" for us.

Point? It shouldn't be this hard, period. I don't know why it is, honestly. But here we are with at least one guy who can't play (even though he's been good before) in Hubbard, a so-so LT, and questions and probably a competition at RG.

I'm just guessing that the RG is on the team and we're likely to have two new tackles but if one stays it'll be Robinson. That's all I got.
 
OL is all about continuity. You can have a bunch of average guys as long as they are in lock step. Problem is the Browns have a couple really good guys, and a couple of JAGs....and one 'should not be on the field' guy...and they haven't played together for even 1 full season. Recipe for a QB to get his hand hurt 2x in one season...busted up ribs 2x in one season...and inability to take advantage of a deep threat like OBJ.

Also: I asked Jake about the fact that scads of Browns OL castoffs go on to start (or be a key backup) for better teams, playoff teams... and why would that be, when we always seem to be looking?

He said what I kinda thought: We keep letting guys go before they can develop, be molded into the scheme like DF said. Reiter is a prime example, a guy plenty in the organization knew had starter traits... and now he's been starting and playing well for the Chiefs.

I just heard of a backup tackle who became a starter, played well, expected to keep starting... was a Brown for a couple years, forgot his name. The Auburn kid.

At the same time, he said, we're forcing capable veterans into jobs they're not suited for (I think he's talking mostly about McCray, and Teller had almost exclusively been a LG).

So that's why guys like Teller and Forbes are important. Both are physically elite, young, and moldable. That's how good lines are built and sustained. Not by having the league's highest paid guards.

but you can't do that if you are changing schemes every other year....CONTINUITY!!!
 
Very true, and I love Campen. If we make a HC change, I hope he can stay. Although I'd need to hear about the McCray starting in place of a healthy Robinson thing.

I will never understand how this isn't clear to Haslam. We don't let guys develop, much less develop in the same scheme, and then wonder why we've constantly got issues with false starts, holding, poor timing and no cohesion. Much less a lack of consistency in play.

Guys like Forbes and Teller are exciting because they pose the opportunity for development of naturally talented kids who are raw as fuck - but can we get a starter dirt cheap? But we're never going to have that with any consistency because we don't keep guys around long enough to find out what they've really got - and even if we do keep them around, they've played in five different systems and had no chance to reach a point in which they're playing with more instinct than direct thought.

Admittedly, I'm down on Teller because of his performance against Pittsburgh. But then it dawns on you that it's a 25 year old who is getting his first taste of starting in the NFL on a team he's been with for a little over three months. And we get mad when someone in that situation has a bad game. Fire everyone, start over.

For all the general knowledge about how important consistency and cohesion is for an NFL OL, we're fucking determined to never let any Browns OL reach that point.

this line was a bit throw together
its no secret these starters are not the results of a long term plan
we got caught out a bit this year RE-O-line
I'm sure plans are being made as we speak to remedy that

our developmental guys will compete in camp with our (hopefully) high O-line picks

I agree but I think the high OL picks need to go towards tackle rather than guard. That isn't to say I'm not nervous about guard, but I think OT is both more important and a bigger need.

I won't be shocked if we draft two tackles in the first three rounds. We might add a guard, but I can't think of a time a team has ever gone so balls-to-the-wall on a unit.

Huh. Only been saying that since ...forever. Post all the PFF stats you want and believe them with all your might, doesn't make our OL any better than trash. (same with our putrid defence, they get stats in spite of our DC, not because of)

Dorsey will correct, and Baker needs to show the fuck up next season, and spend a little less time in L.A. and a lot more time in Cleveland with his football family. Like Landry.

Why do you guys have trouble spelling defense and offense? I'm not ocd on too many things, but that is one of them. It's like nails on a chalkboard........
 
This OL was cobbled together because Dorsey was trying to catch lightening in a bottle. It didn't happen (OBJ injury, Njoku injury, etc...) and the OL was then exposed because the 'fantasy skill players' weren't able to cover for them.

Now the Browns need to work on it the old fashioned way...build the damn thing.
