We have to talk about SOMETHING during the dry season... and core debates spring up. Have every year since we started doing this back in the 1990s. I don't think it's the topic that's inherently wrong or troubling -- I mean, nobody debates himself so for every Clausen post I wrote somebody else countered it and we were all even-steven -- it's just a matter of how well we do keeping things civil.
You know my stance: Just like a TV show can't warp your kids' minds if you don't actually let them watch it... and just like somebody else's gay marriage has no effect on your straight marriage, assuming you don't live in a one bedroom together... no topic is poison to anybody if they simply choose to not participate in it. That's the beauty of all these different threads and categories.
I will never get somebody dropping into a thread to say they hate the thread. How does that make any sense? It's like starting a fight with somebody you don't really know because you don't like his looks or the way he talks or thinks.
Uhm... isn't it cool then that you don't hang out and never will? Isn't it a non-problem? Isn't it kind of self-correcting? You'll never live together or be in the same club so how is it a problem?
But we're talking about human beings and they're endlessly vexing. And I have no idea how I went off on that weird riff but I hope it made some sense. Peace, love, and understanding.
