The Offensive Line

Yeah T Wheatley has looked very good and can play some LT though I'm not sure who is better between him and Hudson. It does explain why Hudson was livid about that BS holding call against him. He's feeling the heat of the competition.

Some very tough decisions will be made on the Oline, no doubt. A couple of potential starting OLinemen will be leaving Berea. A trade is a way to get some value for Callahan's work.

Say we keep 10

The 5 starters, then

Jones - OT
Hudson - OT
Wheatley - OT
Dunn - G/C
Wypler - C/G
Harris - C/G

Not sure who the odd man out is, of those 6.

Wonder if AB can get like a 6th rounder out of Harris
Wonder if Wheatley can surpass Hudson

… which is why when people knock their GM’s, I have to laugh because even BB isn’t perfect. He may not even be that good (at talent acquisition). He took Sony Michelle instead of Nick Chubb for example. BB is a heckuva coach who stumbled into a 6th round GOAT.

The Patriots fans don’t think he infallible like the national media thinks, when it comes to GM-ing.

So, after 3 weeks, we’re the 5th ranked unit. Have to say I’m a little surprised.

Jed is Jed - the 91st ranked tackle
Teller is the 22nd ranked guard
Bitonio is the 27th ranked guard
Pocic is still doing well at 8th
Dawand is doing well at pass blocking

Part of O-line gelling involves knowing your QB, so improvement will come.

The Bengals, Steelers, and Titans all feel the strength of their defense is their DL, so we’ve faced good competition there.

I’d like to see more from the unit though.

There are several plays where the OLine has been off in the run blocking just a bit and some of that has to do with facing a stout D in Tennessee. I suspect Chubb covered up some of those mistakes but that ain't happening anymore.

Teller is the 22nd ranked guard
Bitonio is the 27th ranked guard
Wow! I could have sworn their contracts rank them in the top. . . I don't know. . . 10 of guard contracts?? Yeesh.

Edit: Yep, quick google search shows Teller as the 6th highest paid guard, Bitonio as 10th.

I imagine their ratings suffer a bit due to their outside neighbors?? It must help playing next to Joe Thomas rather than Jed Wills. And, bright as his future may be, Dawand is super green.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Joel & Wyatt are way better than 22 & 27. So I blame Jed, and Dawand being a rookie :ROFLMAO:

Have to take PFF grades, especially for online and dline with a grain of salt. They don't know what the calls or assignments were. As an example I have heard Marcellus Wiley relay a few times stories of how a DE will get asked/criticism from media and PFF for loss of containment. But a stunt was called and thus the DE did what he was supposed to. But that explanation only comes out in the film review by the team with the DC basically saying my bad on the call we made for that play.

If we're still a top 5 OLine why is AB looking for a LT, a rookie is our RT and our QB isn't playing? I know he got hurt running the ball and all but something ain't right.

I said the same earlier. If Leatherwood is showing signs that he's up to speed with the system, has the technique down and knows the playbook it could be time. Maybe he is and that's why Wills had a good game against the niners? He's feeling the pressure. I don't know, but Leatherwood was also a high draft pick. He has to have some legit ability.

Leatherwood played at least average-ly as a guard. His few games at OT were abysmal.
Callahan has had a minute to look at him now in practice. Probably enough to make a judgement if he's worth more effort or not.

We only have two OT's on the PS, and no C's or G's.

Wonder if it's time to consider Wypler and Harris at the back-up G's moving forward. One is green and one is small, but that's probably okay for an in-game injury.

If Bitonio can't go I'd expect both Harris and Wypler to be ready for game action at LG. Drew Forbes is still on the Non football injury list. Can he come back and what is wrong with him? He was one of the Covid guys who left the team when he had the option too. I suspect he has to deal with a long term or lifetime medical condition but there is no news on him?

He was also the "Player X" top secret late round prospect of his draft and we have damn near nothing out of him.

The only OLinemen on the roster that's not currently active outside of Conklin and Leatherwood is Nsekhe. All Tackles. As is backup James Hudson III
