Browns - Jimmy Haslam | Page 3 | Barking Hard

Browns Jimmy Haslam

A quick listen if you're up for it. You do have to endure cringey Jake Burns as the host.

The Spark Notes version - Haslam is outspending all the other owners by a lot. He isn't the richest, that's Denver, but he is in the top-10, or maybe the top half, BUT, he's #1 in what he's willing to do financially.

How the Cleveland Browns Cap and Cash Spending is Sustainable and the Advantages It Presents with Jack Duffin

The Haslam naysayers will say he has been way over involved at times (btw, no way would I buy a team and then never be involved. I've never faulted him for that), say he drafted Manziel and Baker, say he didn't know what he was doing when he bought the team (name me a new owner who does), etc etc.

But, these points are undebatable:

1) He's outspending every owner by a lot. The NFLPA, players and agents love it. Other teams do not.
2) He's good for Cleveland. Wants to keep the stadium on the lakefront and develop it.
3) He's good for Ohio. The Columbus Crew for example.

Now, you can say "but he's going to want the tax payers to blah blah blah". Well, every single owner does this in the NFL. It's financially irresponsible not to. The owner who is willing to overpay for the team, and also, spend billions on a new stadium is a pipedream. He doesn't exist.

So, I'm TeamJimmy.

Beats cheap Art, who moved the team, and the uninterested Lerner fam.

The cheapest and poorest team is the Bengals, but they have Joe.
The Ravens are pissed about Watson's money, but savvy, and will likely figure out Lamar.
The Steelers have Tomlin, that's legit. Otherwise, they've been blessed with Bradshaw then Big Ben. Just like the Packers were with Favre then Rodgers and the Pats were with Brady. It wasn't their owners, it was the QB. The Steelers will only be relevant because of Mike Tomlin.

So now, we have the QB, a recent HC of the year (f-you Travis Kelce), a super bowl DC and an expensive roster.

It's all on Watson and Stefanski tbh. There are no more excuses.

I've always wanted to be in cap hell and on top of the division. I'll take spending the most and on top instead, because AB and the FO knows what they're doing with the calculated overspending. We aren't in cap hell, and Haslam can now just pay up, and let'em work.

Monday morning rant over, as it was like a fart in a skillet. Totally all over the place haha.

We're still a losing Football team.. Nothings changed...

I'm ok with the Haslam's because they will spend money. Like Dan Gilbert sometimes it's misspent money, but it's better than being the Bengals, no doubt. They've made mistakes, but it seems like they've settled in on this FO and staff and the team has talent. We'll see.

I still don't like the lakefront stadium for the city of Cleveland, but it's damn near identical to Soldier Field in Chicago being right on the lake. Cleveland should look for another location and open up the lakefront to more forward, thinking investments. One more thing is they need new scoreboards that don't look like Tennessee. That's not us. That's them.

Guess I'm thinking...

Kraft - owned and average team, lucked in to Tom Brady and started every year with an automatic 6 wins because the Bills, Jets, and Dolphins sucked. Now, he has no Brady and those teams are all good.

GB fan owned - again, lucked in to back-to-back hall of fame QB's. That luck is about to run out.

Actually, I'm not going to go on and on, other than to say most NFL successes are because the owner lucked out, not because he's a heckuva owner. Mike Brown comes to mind when he was bad enough at the right time to get Burrow. Now, he'll be competitive for 10-15 years no matter what.

Art Modell Begged for any money for a Stadium for years spent his own, on the rathole on the lake. then begged for over a decade for a new home. got passed over by the Tribe & Cavs. they found money weeks after he left. enough said.
Football wise he hired top people until he left and after. did not always get along with them(Paul Brown). but that's just business.

Cowboys, Giants/Jets (they have a joint venture that owns MetLife), Patriots, and Rams. They dress it up as separate entities, but the teams/owners own those entities.

Others lease, or lease and act as operator of the stadium. If I am not mistaken as the operator of the stadium they control other events at the stadium and can then make revenue off it. They also get larger amount of concession revenue and probably other things. Though I suspect there are some type of maintenance costs they are responsible for.

Then the next question is how many years are left on the lease. That would impact the price as well as the stadium's condition. Still comes out to the east and west coast/MSM markets have more value.

I'd imagine those who are lease + operator have more value than lease only. I wouldn't imagine the lease length makes any difference, other than of you are a perspective owner who has the pockets and desire to build your own.

Location, brand/name, TV market, population, facilities, and success record all play a part to the value. How much each makes up is anyone's guess with out knowing the formula Forbes uses. Google search in progress

Watched Forbes Sports Money for many years. if anything they have been low balling the values of sports teams. as when they sell the price paid is more than their last valuation. $hts crazy

This part I read caught my eye since the Haslam's are looking for a new stadium. They might say they want to refurbish but after reading this they would also want a hotel and shopping plaza as part of it as well as a player facility of some type to increase the value of the team. I doubt there is enough room where the current stadium is located.

...Team-Related Businesses and Real Estate Holdings: The value of a franchise owner’s equity in team-related businesses that are distinct corporate entities, as well as government-assessed real estate related to venue, practice facilities and adjacent developments. Examples include: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ 20%-plus interest in Legends Hospitality, a stadium operations corporation; and the Washington Commanders’ subsidiaries, which own nearly 400 acres split between 12 parcels near the team’s stadium and practice facility.

This category excludes value derived from enterprises determined as too attenuated from the football team’s operations, which fall into three categories: (1) rent from non-football, outside-of-stadium retail operations, like the Green Bay Packers’ Titletown venture or New England Patriots’ Patriot Place; (2) licensing fees paid by non-football third parties to a team’s sister company for the use of intellectual property; (3) team owner’s investment in businesses unrelated to franchise operations. Examples include the Cowboys’ sister company Blue Star Land’s joint ventures with real estate partners or the Formula 1 race in Miami operated by Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross....
