The Offensive Line

Danimal, my man - not to throw you under the bus, but.........

We discussed this earlier when Larry was first released. (page 27 of this thread).

Yes, he is a three time Pro Bowler still on the right side of 30, but....

He also has the reputation of being one of the slowest guards in the league. That is not a good fit for Callahan's scheme. I really don't see an asset to signing someone who can't help your wide running game or screen game - both staples of Stefanski's offense.

Check out those posts and see what you think.

I didn't tune in at the time, but just caught the replay. More entertaining than I thought it'd be I have to admit.

We're just not in the market. Callahan really loves Teller, he'll be in a much better situation and be better prepared... and he was pretty darn good down the stretch last year. I think within the walls, this isn't really a competition, even though I suspect it'll be staged as a soft one.

This morning, Sobo called Nick Harris one of the best picks in the entire draft, not just for the Browns. He's 100% made to be an OZB center, perfect match of talent and team. Says it's ideal that he gets a couple years, needs to get stronger, but then he'll be a starter for a long run. Just thought I'd toss that in here, because the OL just feels so damn rags to riches.

Just throwing it out there, we’re four out of five solid
I know Shep loves Teller and hopefully he fills the roll
but like the Dline where’s the depth? Forbes or Hubbard?
I want to see Chubb crack 2000 this year and Baker
upright!

We have the best depth on the OL I can recall, that's for sure. When you start making starting RTs into swing tackles, that's a good thing.

I'm assuming the scratch -- Wills/Bitonio/Tretter/Teller/Conklin. That means Hubbard, Lamm, Harris, Forbes, and the other IOL we signed as depth. Man, that sounds really good to me.

Wait, did you say you're worried about DL depth? After Clayborn, Billings, and the Mizzou DT?

Yeah... but no team has superstars behind their two superstars. Clayborn, Thomas, Billings and the Missouri kid (complete black hole of memory) feel like quality.

It's so tough to lose a 15-sack guy and then his bookend and just roll.

The Devaroe Turnaround was SO fast. From talking about him taking over for Sheldon fairly soon... to buh-bye. Seemed like a hot minute.

Here's another one I really like in the 2021 draft. G/T Cade Mays who was rumored to be Andrew Thomas' replacement at Georgia, but he decided to transfer to Tennessee.

Take the same path Joel Bitonio did? Dude is a flat out nasty assed run blocker. Me likey.

I think we're OK at Guard for the moment in that we've groomed last year's rookie Forbes and added FA Colby Gossett, who Callahan talks up a bunch, to Teller. We drafted Harris who will be groomed this year as a back up before taking over a spot maybe in 2022. That would be optimal for him to learn and add strength.

Don't forget our TE's will be blocking more as will the FB.

So far so good.

Conklin - solid, mild injury, we're okay there
Hubbard - we heard he was a much better WZBS guy, and man is he. MUCH better play. Hat tip AB.
Teller - WOW what a start
Tretter - knee? We don't need no knees
Bitonio - Joel being Joel
Wills - JT says he looks veteran already ... huge test this weekend though

My point is every team looks at their O-line and hopes each player either holds steady (if he's already good) or "takes the next step". So far, we're lucky at every OL position.

Worst OLine in the league.

32. Washington Football Team

Last year, Washington allowed the second-highest pressure rate in the NFL at 30.4 percent. The left side of its offensive line is in disrepair, as it will be starting either journeyman Cornelius Lucas or fourth-round rookie Saahdiq Charles at the tackle position. The right side of the line is a bit better off, but stud guard Brandon Scherff has dealt with injuries the past few seasons while right tackle Morgan Moses has committed a whopping 26 penalties the past two years. Without quality blocking, Dwayne Haskins may struggle to make the jump some are anticipating. That will cap the ceilings of Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims and will make Washington’s projected running back by committee much less attractive because of the uncertain blocking.

Probably the strength of this team right now, and Hubbard came in without missing a beat!

Also helps that our starting TE's are effective run blockers to boot. Well except for Njoku.

PFF says Wills did good, it's in their re-focused article.

ROOKIE WATCH

Brown left tackle Jedrick Wills, Jr. continued the strong start to his career with a clean pass-blocking effort. He’s handled the transition to left tackle nicely.

Tight end Harrison Bryant played 52 snaps in the Browns two-tight end heavy system and caught four passes for 37 yards including two first downs while also forcing two missed tackles.

Wills with a pass blocking grade of 80.0 vs the Boys. Second only to Tretter on our O-line. Getting better every week, and a little faster than I/we expected tbh.
